As with many other professions within the medical and health fields, school psychologists receive their education and training through a combination of classroom learning and field experience. It is through this collaboration and continuity between university education and field-based training that the student develops a foundation of knowledge for successful practice. And yet, there is often a gap between the expectations of the university program and the realities of field-based supervision and internship, which can leave new professionals unprepared for their roles in the schools, ultimately resulting in a lower standard of care for the children. This two volume handbook examines both the critical training and pedagogical issues at the university and practicum levels, and provides the tools and information so that the academy and the field can collaborate in the training enterprise. Both volumes provide the theoretical foundations and the practice implications along with practical information to support that natural integration.
Volume 1 focuses on the professional issues and topics that form the core of the university curriculum for the school psychology specialist degree. Four main sections will review contemporary university training programs, foundations of school education, key areas of responsibility for school-based mental health professionals, and a look to the future of training for school psychologists.
