      ntroduction

Welcome to Your Turn to Read 2. We made this book for adult learners like you, whose English reading is at the elementary stage but want to improve their reading skills and build confidence in their reading. This book aims to show you how we use English in different parts of the world, as well as how English connects people and itself undergoes changes. Your Turn to Read aims to build vocabulary used in the Oxford 5000 and CEFR A2/B1 sets, as well as supplementing those with higher frequency words that we often use in global English discussions.

Your Turn to Read 2 connects readers with topics from many of the major places where English is used: the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, as well as from the many immigrants to those countries whose languages and cultures become part of the changing story of English.

In each of the 12 units, in addition to English language skills, learners will develop learning and studying skills, and will be asked to think critically about their world. Units are generally aligned with the English speaking textbook Your Turn to Speak, but may be used independently and in any order. Here is what you will find in each unit:

Skill Focus—Each unit presents one learning skill that will facilitate life-long learning, such as developing online research skills, improving reading comprehension by previewing, skimming, and scanning a text, and expanding vocabulary words with various vocabulary learning strategies.

Critical Thinking—Each unit begins with an activity that requires learners to think by researching, comparing, reasoning, justifying, or making a choice.

Vocabulary—Each unit presents the key vocabulary words from the text and are practiced throughout the unit.

Grammar Express—Each unit summarizes the grammar points that frequently appear in the text and are practically applied in the follow-up activities.

Real-Life Reading/Writing—In order to relate users of this book to their real-life experience, each unit wraps up with an authentic reading or writing extension.
