The Yellow Earth is the most acclaimed work of the modern Chinese cinema. The controversy that surrounded its release greatly increased its local impact, while the subtlety of the film itself drew an international audience sometimes only distantly awareof its political implications.

This book consists of a comprehensive study of the film plus a complete translation of the filmscript based on the published version and with a brief notation of camera directions. It begins with an account of the plot and the way in which the plot has been interpreted, followed by a detailed account of the making of the film and reactions to it after its release in 1984. The final chapter gives a biographical sketch of the director, Chen Kaige. The materials for this study include interviews with members of the film team.

Illustrations show major scenes from the film and the director at work.

During her second stay in China, McDougall became acquainted with some of China"s best young writers and film-makers, and since the early 1980s she has done much to introduce these people to Western audiences.

Between visits to China, McDougall taught Chinese at Sydney University and Harvard. In 1986 she left China for Norway where she became Professor of Modern Chinese at the University of Oslo, and in 1990 she took up the new chair of Chinese at the University of Edinburgh.
