It gives me great pleasure to see the publication of this volume, a collection of 50 patterns of the so-called Taiwanese Mandarin (TwMd). Peiting, the author, was a former MA student of mine at Shida, Taipei. This volume is not a theoretical analysis of TwMd but a pedagogical complement, yes complement not supplement, to standard training and learning in L2 Chinese, if it is the wish or need of some learners to be exposed to some localized linguistic phenomena. Its intended for learners of modern Chinese at the level of A2 (EU) competence.
Taiwanese Mandarin is a creole between standard Mandarin as spoken in Taiwan and the Southern Min dialect as spoken natively by some 75% of the Taiwanese population. It is a configuration of standard Mandarin phonetics and vocabulary plus Southern Min grammar. This configuration is true of all creoles globally. Therefore, the mixture is not peculiarly Taiwanese. Similar creoles can be observed elsewhere outside of Taiwan. Like most Han dialects spoken in China and Taiwan, Southern Min does not have a written script. Thus Taiwanese Mandarin as written locally in Taiwan is entirely arbitrary and most often transient. But this does not bother anyone. Users speak it and leave it to the various media to worry about how it is represented visually.
Taiwanese Mandarin touches hearts at the local and the deepest level. If it is important for you to be in touch with the local population in Taiwan, this book is a must. Enjoy it！！
