請所有讀到這本書的孩子們原諒我把這本書獻給一個大人。

我有一個很重要的理由：他是我在這個世界上最好的朋友。

我還有另一個理由：這個大人什麼都懂，甚至也懂孩子的書。

我還有第三個理由：這個人住在法國，他在那裡飢寒交迫需要安慰。

如果這些理由還不夠充分，

我願意把這本書獻給還是孩子時的這個大人。

所有的大人都曾經是個孩子，雖然很少人記得這一點。

I ask the indulgence of the children who may read this book for dedicating it to a grown-up.

I have a serious reason: he is the best friend I have in the world.

I have another reason: this grown-up understands everything, even books about children.

I have a third reason: he lives in France where he is hungry and cold. He needs cheering up.

If all these reasons are not enough,

I will dedicate the book to the child from whom this grown-up grew.

All grown-ups were once children—although few of them remember it.

And so I correct my dedication:

Je demande pardon aux enfants davoir dedie ce livre a une grande personne.

Jai une excuse serieuse : cette grande personne est le meilleur ami que jai au monde.

Jai une autre excuse : cette grande personne peut tout comprendre, meme les livres pour enfants.

Jai une troisieme excuse : cette grande personne habite la France ou elle a faim et froid.

Elle a besoin detre consolee .

Si toutes ces excuses ne suffisent pas,

je veux bien dedier ce livre a lenfant qua ete autrefois cette grande personne.

Toutes les grandes personnes ont dabord ete des enfants. (Mais peu dentre elles sen souviennent.)
